Original title : World's Greatest Dad (USA, 2009) / Address : Bobcat Goldthwait / Cast : Robin Williams, Daryl Sabara, Alexie Gilmore / Duration : 99 minutes
I'll do anything I thought I'd never do: recommend a movie with Robin Williams . So, this actor who I've learned to hate because of their worst films ever and tendency to melodrama appears here in a dark and funny story, that neither their presence can ruin.
The film begins as a very black comedy drama. Williams makes Lance, a professor of poetry in high school who dreams of becoming a famous writer (already rejected several books) and has a son, Kyle , which is really unbearable. Adolescent, vulgar bad student and has no redeeming qualities. This not only makes the home life of Lance very difficult (single parent) but that brings labor problems, and that the boy attends the school where his father teaches. One day, after a bizarre incident "erotic" in which Kyle gets involved , Lance sees the possibility of achieving fame and success with which they had dreamed, but to achieve a decision is questionable.
The director and writer of this film is the comedian Bobcat Goldthwait . Those with more than 30 years may remember the series of Police Locademia and occasional farting comedy of the '80s. He was a chubby bald half that talked like screaming ... But little remains of its past poor acting. In recent years the type was uncovered as a writer / director Interestingly enough, reinventing itself from an independent film. The first hour of the film is very good, maintaining a tone of comedy unusually compact black. The character of Kyle (played by Daryl Sabara unknown) is really incredible. One of the most abhorrent and irredeemable young to remember. Then the story goes to the side of satire, applying a critical eye on fame and its mechanisms. In this sense the film is not as effective, but does manage some moments and deep observations. You can say that this is the most tolerable performance Williams in a while. In dramatic and content record is very good in the skin of the poor and lonely character. But the character that will remain in my memory is that of Kyle without doubt.
The truth that, while flawed in some ways, the approach Goldthwait is original and attractive. And it shows as a director to account for its ability to handle the black comedy, a subgenre very difficult to tackle.
