Original title: Edge of Darkness (USA / UK, 2010) / Address: Martin Campbell / Cast: Mel Gibson, Ray Winstone, Danny Huston, Bojana Novakovic / Duration: 117 minutes
seems incredible, but for eight years Mel Gibson starred in a film not (Signs , 2002). Since then, he directed two films and was involved in some scandals changed the perception the public had of him. Ceased to be one of the world's most beloved stars to become a controversial film director but valuable, whose personal problems and unfortunate ideological expressions tarnished his artwork. But they say time heals all wounds, and Mel decided it was time to return to the screen. If indeed it was, I dunno. From what I am pretty sure that the film is chosen for his return was not the happiest. Not for its subject, but by its quality.
Edge of Darkness In Gibson is Thomas Craven, a veteran police officer who receives a visit from his only daughter, 24, who lives in another city. But within hours of arrival, she is brutally murdered on the doorstep of his father. What follows is research starting Craven to find those responsible for the crime and to discover the hidden motives behind the murder.
To begin, I want to get our hopes on those who expect a revenge movie violent and frantic action in the wake of relentless search . At that, Liam Neeson played a former special agent whose daughter was kidnapped in France by traffickers. And the guy was using all methods and resources, mostly involving violence, to find it. This is different. Gibson's character is someone with an undeniable thirst for revenge, but such an investigation of police, following leads and interviewing self to those close to her daughter. While there are a few action scenes, the film goes on the side of drama, intrigue, and the complaint (the company he worked for the girl is engaged to nuclear research and has dubious connections with the government). Of course, the film goes on that side there would be nothing wrong if it were not almost never really got interested. In this sense, the "faults" are shared by the script, direction and the protagonist.
The film is based on an award-winning British TV miniseries of the 80's. I saw that series, also directed by Martin Campbell , but I imagine it was much better than the movie. Here, Campbell (responsible for the excellent Casino Royale ) fails to generate a very strong link between Craven and her daughter as we engage with the story from the beginning. A ten-minute film the girl is already dead, and what follows does little to interest us. The Gibson resource imaginary exchanges taking his daughter, especially small, with me at least it did not work. And the story about the causes of murder intrigued me.
protagonist does not help. Returning to the comparison with relentless search (which also is not a film that has enchanted me), there was the main Liam Neeson, an excellent actor who adds depth and credibility to their characters. Gibson, however, is less ductile. And in this case particular action seemed looser than ever. It is a perception of me, but fails to convey much of anything. And that we're talking about a character who lost her only child, so that there is enough to transmit. Another thing strange: I do not know if it was the copy I saw the movie (it was a role for the press, so it was of good quality) but the voice of Mel sounded very nasal. Is it on purpose for the character? Will the years? Will Mel herr old man? What was I ... As I said, weird.
The film has some moments when lifting, but they are few. These moments are those that appear Ray Winstone , That great British actor who here makes Jedburgh , a security specialist working for the U.S. government, whose task is to "clean up" dirty dishes and tie up loose ends. And that gives a special relationship with Craven . In scenes that appear Winstone, which unfortunately not many, the quality of the film increases. Even Gibson performance improvement your side ... Another good actor, wasted, is Danny Huston, who plays the boss of the company. A typical corporate evil.
Anyway, nothing new under the sun. Vindictive parent, I recommend seeing The Limey , very good film with Steven Soderbergh Terence Stamp. As Gibson I think it has proven to be a very interesting director. And I also believe that much of the public has no desire to see a lot of face. And the charm it once had is not working well. Perhaps in the coming years, Gibson recognize this situation and focus on what you do best. Behind the scenes. And far from the microphones.
The Edge of Darkness opens in Argentina on 25 February.
