Where I Can Get Liscence To Do Brazilian Wax

Living on the edge

Original title: The Hurt Locker (USA, 2009) / Address: Kathryn Bigelow / Cast: Jeremy Renner, Anthony Mackie, Brian Geraghty, Guy Pearce, Ralph Fiennes, David Morse, Evangeline Lilly / Duration: 131 minutes

Ah, the difficult art of criticizing ... How do I explain to them that most acclaimed film of the year in USA (see here), which many experts say Americans as one of the best in the last decade, which has just been nominated for 9 Academy Awards has disappointed me? It's easy, really. This is cinema, and we all have reason to say when. The art really can not be quantified (for that I am thinking about giving up my beloved "Damiancito ). In most cases, the causes that lead to appreciate someone about a work are difficult to explain, because they relate to the emotional. Although there is often rational and ideological reasons that come into play. I think this is the case.
The Hurt Locker narrates the daily life of a U.S. army squad that specializes in off explosives. The film happens in Iraq, although the film does not deal with very specific reference to the conflict itself. The main character is Sergeant William James (Jeremy Renner ), a specialist who constantly risked that seems to defy common sense, and even the rules of the army, dictate. This makes two new friends (actually James joins the squad as a replacement for other specialist), seen with suspicion and as a possible threat. So go on moving from mission to mission, each more stressful than the last.

First of all, let me make it clear that the film did not seem "bad." On the contrary, I think it has high production values. The direction of Kathryn Bigelow is really stressful. Manages to put the viewer in the shoes of the soldiers in the midst of a hostile environment in which you never know who is friend and who foe. Many camera hand, very dizzy, much visual impact. Since this style of filming, is also praising the work of Renner, who manages an intense action-based attitudes, gestures and reactions in situations that make life or death decisions in seconds. In fact, the entire cast provides good jobs. And, of course, all technical aspects of the film (sound, editing, photography) are rare.
Now, let's get to that me (I emphasize this because I think it is important) I came up with the film. First, I had a hard time identifying with the protagonists. I understand that an American feel empathy with these soldiers who risk their lives thousands of miles from home. But I can not help but feel some reluctance towards these guys dressed in green pointing guns and shouting at any Iraqi civilian they deem suspicious. I understand the dangerous nature of the situation, but from the start I can not leave my perception of the facts. In addition, the character of James reaches the height of daring, and their attitudes have never ended for me a satisfactory explanation.

The film makes no judgments about the conflict (this is not inherently bad). In fact, it seems to be interested in a more general human nature, which means that sometimes perform actions that go beyond any logic. Hence, the film begins with the phrase "War is a drug." The purpose of the film is then put us in a world in which men act according to his need for adrenaline, and not its reasoning. This leaves no will be interesting, and the film really does justice to the adrenaline, but I could not help feeling emotionally away from this idea and the protagonist. Therefore, no matter how well intended it is the film or how well it is Renner in his role, I could not finish the story under my skin.
On the other hand, the script is structured through what is happening on different days. Thus, one could divide the plot in each of the situations that the protagonists must cross. All situations expertly executed, as I said. But it also helped me to dramatically film gave me a lot and was growing with the passage of minutes. To make matters worse, the only time the three men create a sort of personal relationship, make it totally drunk and behaving like the typical American soldier, playing to give blows. For someone who hates the doctrines (religious or military) this kind of behavior seem ridiculous, so there was no affinity for that side.

Anyway. Honestly, I put punctuation in the film because I have as usual, but some time ago which I have been rethinking this to give scores. I think it gives an anchor to the comment that perhaps is not quite illustrative. In this case, my review I wanted to make it clear the causes that led to that I could not enjoy this movie as their levels of achievement would merit. I have no doubt that many people will appreciate the adrenaline that the film conveys so well. And I think it's great that way. And take note that I am one of the first to defend this kind of film. But in this case, something happened to me. Something away. I hope you have been clear what it was, so that when they see the film is not ask "How the hell did not like Damien this awesome movie? "Simple. This is cinema, dear friends. And we are all right.

The Hurt Locker opens in Argentina on 4 February.
